Who You Are Not

Last month we learned that human nature is neither good nor bad, but simply programmable. This means that both a ‘monster’ and a ‘saint’ are created under the overriding influence of our society (parents, schools, pop culture, and so on).
That is not to say that pre-birth agreements of an individual soul may not impact one’s role in a theatre of our collective physical reality. Those so-called ‘good’ or ‘bad’ characters ultimately contribute to the awakening of entire human consciousness — a concept that may be too abstract to most people to even entertain, let alone align with.
However, it is those new-found thoughts and beliefs that can transform societal programs, which run our collective human psyche and therefore behavior. Without rewriting those programs, no real change can ever take place in you or in the world.
Let’s then revise the most predominant axiom (which gives rise to further erroneous beliefs) that keeps us away from the truth of Who We Are.
You-are-your-body myth
We all identify with and protect our bodies because a physical apparatus is the only tangible proof of our existence. The ‘realness’ of your body makes it very difficult to believe that you are not what you are.
In a correct sense, the body is nothing else but a vessel for You that allows you to gain physical experience necessary for your spiritual journey through Consciousness.
Your body is a collection of about 36 trillion cells that, depending on their function, create separate parts, such as liver, skin, nails, gray matter, retina, and so forth. On top of that, when you examine the quantum level of physicality, it is a bunch of atoms, which in themselves are a 99.99% empty space.
The truth is that you are not your body at all. You are an individuated point of Consciousness that exists with or without your biological vessel, avatar, or (as some call it) meat-suit. But this fact can’t be just thought of, it needs to be known with every fiber of your being.
Mirror mirror
I was about 6 or 7 years old when I had a brief but profound spiritual experience. I stood in front of a bathroom mirror gazing deeply into my eyes when a Voice in my head spoke: “You are not your body.” To which I silently replied: “I know.”
Of course, my young human Ego didn’t know anything; the knowing came from my wise and ageless Higher Self.
Since that time, not only have I repeated the “I am not my body” mantra on a daily basis, but have kept asking: “What am I then?”
Logically, my reasoning took me to those ‘intangible’ convictions about myself, like ‘am an Orthodox Christian, Polish, orphan, sinner, athlete, perfectionist, etc.’ Then I learned that, as much as they may be useful in this physical reality, they had to be let go of because they are just conditional labels defined by humans and nothing more.
I didn’t arrive at that level of consciousness on my own, though. In my early 30s, A Course In Miracles came into my life. This self-study curriculum on how to heal your split mindhelped me realize that to know who I am is to know who I am not. And for years the course has played a huge part in shedding off of those erroneous identifications I’ve held, which were/are but layers of obstruction to Knowing Thyself.
For example, one of the most detrimental beliefs of mine was that I was an ‘illegal immigrant.’ It took me some effort to dismantle this socially constructed stigma, which had absolutely nothing to do with Who I Am. Because…
I am as God created me.
I am the light of the world.
I am the holy Son of God Himself.
I am not a body. I am free.
If you are a student of ACIM, you understand that, even though it doesn’t give you an exact answer (not the one our Ego mind craves for) to the question of Who You Are, it points you in the right direction, and all you need to do is to walk the path to Truth and learn for yourself.
What’s more, the ‘blue book’ has taught me that Knowing is not merely thinking nor believing. Knowing is a totally different level of consciousness. It gives you real power and confidence. True Knowing leads to God, peace, security, and freedom.
Homework… voluntary of course 😉
How about you? What types of convictions do you cling on to that obstruct the Truth about Your Self?
I challenge you to list at least one belief that is fabricated by modern society (religion, race, social status, group/political associations, etc.) and work with it. Write it down and list the things that the particular belief automatically implies about you (positive & negative). Then ask if they are permanent or can they change? If the latter, know it’s NOT You.
At the end of the day, it’s simply a process of elimination, which can be fun. I hope you’ll try it.
